Milarepas Emanation
In 2001, July, in the heart of the heat of the summer I went to Spain to be with Kelsang Tharpa. I did not know him. I chose to go to Spain for health reasons principally, to benefit from the intense medicinal heat. A day after meeting Gen Tharchin in southern Spain we left in a small group to travel to Madrid from the Mediterranean. He pulled off the road after a few hours and drove down an obscure narrow track to a spot where we parked beside a river. It was a verdant riverside oasis in the most arid countryside imaginable between the Mediterranean and Madrid. We meditated had a picnic, and continued our journey. After another few hours we stopped at the ancient ruins of a Roman town outside Madrid, rambled through the places where the starved lions paced until their human feeding time was manifested by the organizers and presented as entertainment in the coliseum. We meditated again and continued on our way to Madrid. It was 47 degrees and I was coming back to life. My time in Spain over the next six years consisted of regular excursions (usually during courses, retreats, empowerments) up and down hills and mountains, wandering by waterfalls, through pine forests, orchards, vineyards, rivers, sandy seasides, in the dark and in the ferocious light of the summer sun. All the time Gen Tharpa would be guiding inner excursions also, exploring the multitudinous landscapes of the mind. In my opinion Gen Tharpa had/has a lot in common with Milarepa, a Tibetan Himalayan cave meditator who took excursions regularly, teaching Buddhist meditation practices to everyone who would listen, which is why I gave this song the title 'Milarepas Emanation'.
